Edwards Calls on Shea-Porter to Condemn Waters' Vote Against the Veterans Accountability Act

July 20, 2017

"I am calling on Congresswoman Shea-Porter to definitively refuse to attend the fundraiser with Congresswoman Waters. Furthermore, our congresswoman should take immediate action to publicly ask the county committee to recant their invitation for Waters to speak at an event that will assist in raising funds to benefit Shea-Porter and her campaign."

Dover, NH - The public has recently been made aware of deplorable and unacceptable conditions at Manchester’s VA Medical Center as a result of the brave actions of several physicians and medical professionals. This weekend, the Boston Globe reported that these individuals had contacted a federal whistle-blower agency to say that the Manchester VA Medical Center was endangering their patients.

In June, President Donald Trump signed the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017 into law, which has made it easier for the Department of Veterans Affairs to fire employees for wrongdoings and adds protections for whistleblowers in the VA.

Regrettably, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D, CA-43), who will be headlining a fundraiser for the Strafford County Democratic Committee this Sunday, voted against the Veterans Accountability Act of 2017. This is the same legislation that has sought to encourage and protect whistle-blowers like those at the Manchester VA Medical Center to report unacceptable situations.

The Strafford County Democratic Committee has in the past, and will certainly continue to, spend a portion of their resources to benefit Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter's (D, NH-01) campaigns.

Especially given the new revelations at Manchesters VA Medical Center, Eddie Edwards, candidate for Congress in NH-01, is calling for Congresswoman Shea-Porter to not attend the fundraiser this weekend. He is also calling on her to publicly ask the Strafford County Democratic Committee to recant their invitation for Congresswoman Waters to speak at their event.

Eddie Edwards, candidate for Congress in NH-01, released the following statement:

"Reports of the completely unacceptable situations at the Manchester VA Medical Center should be the top priority of Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter and the rest of our federal delegation. I, like every Granite Stater, find it absolutely abhorrent to consider that those who have fought for our country would receive nothing other than the highest quality medical care upon their return.

"If the quality of care for our veterans is anything but first class, our government should be doing everything possible to encourage and protect whistle-blowers. Regrettably, Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California disagrees with that sentiment. Even before recent reports at the Manchester VA Medical center, her vote in itself should have disqualified her from receiving an invitation to speak at the Strafford County Democratic Committee's fundraiser. These new revelations only exacerbate it.
